Every Sunday I watch them walk into church \u2013 Pete down below, quietly unassuming, and four-year-old Levi bobbing along above. They\u2019ve been doing it for over a year now. I\u2019m not exactly sure why. Maybe it\u2019s still painful for Levi to walk. (Not walking was part of what led to his diagnosis in December of 2020.) Maybe it protects his fragile immune system by keeping him naturally distanced from others. Maybe Levi just likes it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever the reason, it\u2019s striking. I\u2019ve carried kids on my shoulders before, and we wobble like a drunk person on stilts. But not Pete and Levi. They move in tandem, as if they\u2019re one person, each completely at ease with the other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we kick-off \u201cRescued,\u201d our third series in Romans, and we approach the Lenten season, I can\u2019t think of a better visual. Rest. Relationship. Trust. Dependence. This is what it means to be rescued. This is the heart of Lent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Wrong Approaches to Lent<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s be honest \u2013 for a lot of us, the real question isn\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Lent?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who Cares? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Who has time for Lent?<\/em> We\u2019ve got book reports and marriage problems, cavities and clogged toilets. We don\u2019t have time to \u201cgive something up,\u201d unless it\u2019s our sanity and that was gone months ago, right?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I get it. I really do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re the person who doesn\u2019t have time to care about Lent, you probably need it more than anybody. I say that with contrition, not judgment, because I\u2019m that person, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there\u2019s an opposite approach to Lent that\u2019s equally misguided. While some of us are too busy to care, others race headlong into Lent like CrossFitters, hellbent on proving we can endure more pain than anyone else. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are you giving up for Lent? Caffeine? I\u2019m giving up food! I\u2019m gonna juice cabbages for 40 days and only drink the broth!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I met a lot of these types in Bible College, and they\u2019re an intimidating bunch. Back then, I saw their self-discipline as admirably unattainable, like a degree of godliness I could never quite reach. But now, I see something else. I see a terrible lie that may have been simmering beneath the surface all along: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perform, achieve, compete \u2013 the reward for your rigor is God\u2019s love.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not the point of Lent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Lent?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lent is an invitation to exhale. It\u2019s a season for slowing down and seeing Jesus in the ordinary rhythms of life. As early as the third and fourth centuries, Christians began observing the 40-day season of Lent as a means of preparing their hearts for Easter. It began on Ash Wednesday (March 2nd this year), and was a time of repentance and reflection, not for the sake of proving one\u2019s own righteousness, but for the sake of relationship \u2013 for greater dependence on God as we live in light of His sacrifice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I think about Lent, I no longer picture a Bible splayed out beside cabbage juice. I picture a little boy sitting on his dad\u2019s shoulders \u2013 a sick boy \u2013 who despite his weakness, doesn\u2019t fight for control or frantically try to prove himself, but instead lives out of a single reality: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dad\u2019s got me<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if we lived the same way? What if those three words became more than a theological construct? What if they were a felt reality, a tried and tested love that sustained us through every season of life?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Win or lose, succeed or fail \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dad\u2019s got me<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chosen or forgotten, accepted or rejected \u2013<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dad\u2019s got me.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broken dishwasher? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dad\u2019s got me.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broken heart? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dad\u2019s got me.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broken everything? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dad\u2019s. Got. Me.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rescue in the Book of Romans<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such a perspective only comes by way of surrender. Romans 10:3 says, \u201cSince they did not know the righteousness of God and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sought to establish their own<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they did not submit to God\u2019s righteousness.\u201d Have you ever tried to rescue someone who didn\u2019t want to be rescued? Who rejected every morsel of wisdom? Bucked against any vestige of authority?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rescue requires submission. Much as I want to be like Levi, more often than not, I\u2019m the squirmy kid, struggling to get down \u2013 fighting my own Dad\u2019s protection \u2013 so I can race off on my own. Do it my way. Prove I\u2019m enough. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establish my own righteousness.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gosh, it\u2019s exhausting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, I shared an early draft of this article with Levi\u2019s mom, Kristie, and I finally found out why Levi sits on Pete\u2019s shoulders. Kristie said that the first time Levi went under anesthesia shortly after being diagnosed, he woke up hallucinating severely. He was hysterical \u2013 tearing off his clothes and hurting everyone who tried to soothe him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In desperation, Pete grabbed Levi and put him on his shoulders. Immediately, Levi stopped. Now, after every procedure, that\u2019s where Levi asks to go. Same thing at church.
