This is a question reserved for dark days \u2013 for seasons of grief, failure, and disappointment. And yet, it\u2019s a cautiously hopeful question. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> God bring good out of bad? Can He redeem what\u2019s been lost? Heal what\u2019s been broken? If so, how?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romans 11:22 urges us to \u201cconsider the <\/span><b>kindness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>sternness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of God.\u201d These two attributes are core tenets of God\u2019s character, and together they help us understand how He brings good out of bad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, we imagine kindness and sternness to be mutually exclusive, to look something like this:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-102634 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/discovergrace.com\/\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/22_GC_Series_Rescued-PMikeArticleGraphic-1a-1024x245.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"191\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I bet you could close your eyes right now and picture one person who epitomizes either end of the spectrum. An adoring grandma. A terrifying boss. Where does God land?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harsh Tyrant or Gentle Santa?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of us view God primarily as stern \u2013 the Punisher of anyone who steps out of line. Remember Job\u2019s friends? In the darkest season of his life, they sat silently with him for seven days and had a beautiful ministry of presence. Then they opened their mouths and everything went downhill. In a nutshell, they concluded that Job must have disobeyed God because God is only stern with people who are bad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that\u2019s just not true. Actually, Job was dealt with harshly <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because he was righteous<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Job 1:1-12). You know who else was godly and upright? Joseph. David. Peter. John the Baptist. You know what they faced? Slavery. Imprisonment. Family trauma. Estrangement. Crucifixion. And a beheading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just because you\u2019re facing a dark night of the soul doesn&#8217;t mean God hates you or is punishing you. To live by such moralism is to forget the kindness of God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what happens on the other end of the spectrum if we cast God as gentle Santa, a jolly agent of goodwill without any sternness at all? The problem with focusing solely on God\u2019s kindness is that it disables us from understanding suffering. How do we reconcile a God who\u2019s always kind with circumstances that are terrible? People who fall into this mindset tend to give evil way too much power. They say things like, \u201cGod would never let that happen, so it must be Satan.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But God does allow stern things to happen and is stern Himself. That\u2019s not ungodly. It\u2019s actually really godly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the Kindness and Sternness of God<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-102635 alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/discovergrace.com\/\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/22_GC_Series_Rescued-PMikeArticleGraphic-2a-300x286.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"286\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/286;\" \/>If we could curve that spectrum into a circle, we\u2019d see that kindness and sternness aren\u2019t contradictory. They\u2019re actually side by side, and in His supremacy, God fully embodies both. He doesn\u2019t vacillate between attributes, but manifests both simultaneously. As He disciplines, He is driven by love (Hebrews 12:6). When He relents and shows compassion, He does not cede His power.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why we love and fear God at the same time. His sternness sobers us to recognize that \u201cthe fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death\u201d (Proverbs 14:27). It does not exist in opposition to His kindness but in harmony with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Does God Bring Good Out of Bad?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you facing a trial? Stern circumstances produce steadfast character. This is one of the ways God works good out of bad \u2013 He uses suffering to bring us to a place of wholeness, \u201cmature and complete, lacking nothing\u201d (James 1:2-4).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you reaping the consequences of sin? Don\u2019t lose heart \u2013 stern discipline produces peace. Though painful, it\u2019s actually a form of divine rescue. The author of Hebrews writes, \u201cNo discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harvest of righteousness and peace<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for those who have been trained by it\u201d (Hebrews 12:11).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you in a prolonged season of suffering? God has not forgotten you. One day \u2013 whether in this life or the one to come \u2013 you\u2019ll see that all along God was working beauty out of ashes, goodness out of sorrow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is not faithful in spite of His sternness.
