I\u2019m sorry that I\u2019m too little.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forgive me that I didn\u2019t do enough, or that<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve done the wrong thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I apologize for taking up space beyond my allotted energy, time, focus.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For women with leadership gifts, that kind of guilt only screams louder over time. We listen, and we second-guess our way out of the spotlight, burying our talents in the fields of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not the right time,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what will people think,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I couldn\u2019t offend or outshine someone else.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We find moments of courage now and then, digging our gifts back up to hold them to the light, only to bury them deep down inside once more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God couldn\u2019t have meant me. Not here. Not now.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But God made us women with skill. He called us <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do our souls keep whispering <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bad?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>How God writes His story through women leaders<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God, on the other hand, never apologizes for choosing women to do His work. He calls them and takes care to name them in His Word.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God spoke through the prophet<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Chronicles+34:22-29&amp;version=NIV\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Huldah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the great Queen<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Esther+4:15-16&amp;version=NIV\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Esther<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the judge<\/span><a href=\"about:blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deborah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the prophet<\/span><a href=\"about:blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He worked through the apostle<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+16:7&amp;version=NIV\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Junia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, through the deaconess<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans%2016:1-3&amp;version=NIV\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phoebe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and through<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians+4:2-3&amp;version=NIV\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euodia and Syntyche<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who fought on the front lines of the gospel side-by-side with Paul.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In scripture, we also meet<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+8:1-3&amp;version=NIV\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joanna* and Susanna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who supported Christ and the disciples financially and traveled along with them. We meet<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Corinthians%2016:19&amp;version=NIV\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Priscilla,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who helped host a church in her home, and Mary the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+1:26-38&amp;version=NIV\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mother of Jesus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whom God trusted to guide the most important Person in history into His adult life and ministry. We read about God\u2019s plan for a Savior preserved through Miriam, Ruth, Abigail, Rahab, Jehosheba, and Elizabeth. We see that women were among the last at the cross and the first at the empty tomb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Old Testament, the prophet Joel foretold that both men and women would be filled with the Spirit and speak the truth of the Lord\u2019s great mercy, and the apostle Peter repeats Joel\u2019s words at Pentecost: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your sons <\/span><\/i><b><i>and <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your daughters will prophesy\u2026I will pour out my Spirit on women <\/span><\/i><b><i>and<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> men<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts%202:16-18&amp;version=NIV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acts 2:16-18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Joel+2:28-29&amp;version=NIV\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joel 2:28-29<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, emphasis mine).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God continually writes women into the front lines of the story, and He longs to do so with the gifts He\u2019s granted to women in the present. Just as it would have been so for Esther or Priscilla or Mary, it is sin to use fear and apology to cross our own God-written lines out of the script.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>How Jesus met one woman leader in the middle of her regret<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Magdalene is one of the most shocking women leaders in scripture. Jesus frees her from possession by seven demons, and she repays His mercy by following Him all of her days, even to His brutal death and lonely grave.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her name is mentioned in the gospels more than most of the apostles, and \u2014 in an era when the testimony of women was dismissed as unworthy and unreliable \u2014 she was chosen by Jesus to be the first to know He was no longer in His tomb, the first to see Him alive, and the first to carry the good news of His resurrection to others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWoman,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoken to Mary Magdalene, is the first word out of His mouth after His death and resurrection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As citizens of the Land of Apology, we can hear ourselves in her moments of distress and regret at the empty tomb in John chapter 20. Peter and John have run away in astonishment, but Mary stays to personalize the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey have taken my Lord away,\u201d she says, crying, \u201cand I don\u2019t know where they have put him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m sorry. I don\u2019t know what happened. It\u2019s my fault I wasn\u2019t here.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSir,\u201d she says to Jesus, not really looking at Him, thinking He must be the gardener. \u201cIf you have carried him away, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I did too little. I should do more. Let me make it right.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b><b><i>Mary.\u201d<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary\u2019s name means both \u201cbitterness\u201d and \u201cbeloved,\u201d and with a single word, Jesus rewrites her story from the former to the latter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With one word, He knows who she is \u2014 a woman who is thwarted by grief and doubt, both in Jesus and in her own weaknesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With one word, she knows who He is \u2014 He is her teacher \u2014 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabboni! <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 He is Lord, He is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alive.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is also her friend. He has just conquered death in all ways, for all people, for all time, and He still cares enough to call her \u2014 a girl \u2014 by name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>How to leave the Land of Apology<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus is our friend, and He is calling us out by our names, women of God. He is writing us into His plans and His purposes. He wants to use your life and mine, and all of the gifts He has given us, to tell the world that He is alive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beside the empty tomb, Jesus sends Mary out as the first missionary of the good news. He calls her \u2014 and us \u2014 to move beyond the emotions and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what ifs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and apologies of the moment to carry the truth of His victory to all people:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo not hold on to me\u2026go instead to my brothers and tell them\u201d (John 20:17).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lead out of my grace instead of your guilt, Mary. Don\u2019t focus on yourself in this moment, just go tell them about me.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must leave the Land of Apology, dear sisters of God, and move from all our potential bitterness to live as one who is beloved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must use our gifts without guilt, not to point to ourselves, but to say boldly, as Mary did, that \u201cI have seen the Lord\u201d (John 20:18).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otherwise, we\u2019ll expand the small plot of our fears into a vast, patchwork field of insecurity and regret. And soon, the biggest apology we\u2019ll owe is to our God and to ourselves, the women who were made in His image, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*many scholars believe that Joanna and Junia are the same person, with Joanna being her Hebrew name and Junia being her Roman one.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every girl I\u2019ve ever met owns a small plot in the Land of Apology.
