{"id":111242,"date":"2023-05-31T13:05:28","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T17:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/discovergrace.com\/?p=109620"},"modified":"2023-09-19T15:51:10","modified_gmt":"2023-09-19T19:51:10","slug":"knowing-yourself-the-critical-component-of-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/discovergrace.com\/knowing-yourself-the-critical-component-of-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"Godly Influence: The Critical Components of Leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script src=\"https:\/\/apps.elfsight.com\/p\/platform.js\" defer=\"defer\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"elfsight-app-902b5da6-ebf1-4ddc-83c8-b8d136bc373c\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best leaders don\u2019t just know the art of communication or of influence. <\/span><b>They know themselves. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They know who they are, where they\u2019re going, and why they\u2019re going there. This is harder than it sounds. People don\u2019t get excited about confronting buried pain in order to understand themselves. They get excited about increasing productivity and sales, about growing bigger churches, and leading their kids to state championships.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of that is wrong. Results are encouraging. Whether you\u2019re leading a family, a company, or a soccer team, we focus a lot on results because they\u2019re measurable.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They give us a metric for success. But I\u2019m convinced that at the heart of every leadership crisis, you won\u2019t just find a lack of results. You\u2019ll find a leader who doesn\u2019t know themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Difference Between Management and Leadership<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you ever been in such a rush to get somewhere that you took a wrong turn? The pressure begins mounting, the curse words begin flying, and all you can think is, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBleepety-bleep, I have GOT to get where I\u2019m going!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that moment, your biggest problem isn\u2019t time. <\/span><b>It\u2019s direction.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you don\u2019t know where you\u2019re going, the amount of time it takes to get there, really doesn\u2019t matter. This is one of the fundamental mistakes people make in leadership. They focus primarily on \u201cspeed.\u201d They want to get things done quickly, efficiently, and effectively. Speed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an important part of leadership, but it\u2019s not the sum total. I like to think of leadership not in terms of \u201cspeed,\u201d but in terms of \u201cvelocity.\u201d Velocity is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speed<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plus direction. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just how quickly we\u2019re getting somewhere. It\u2019s where we\u2019re going and why.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about this in parenting. We could spend all day barking orders: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get your backpack. Get your shoes. Pick it up. Put it on. Stop fighting. Do your homework. Get out the door. Go, go, go.<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life moves at breakneck speed, but where are we actually going? What\u2019s the goal behind the sports and school and spiritual disciplines? If you can\u2019t answer that question, you\u2019re not really leading your kids so much as managing their schedules. You\u2019re a life coordinator, not a leader.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the same in business, church, and every other realm. If you\u2019re constantly pushing people in a hundred different directions, just to get results, without any real concern for who they\u2019re becoming under your leadership, you\u2019re not a leader. You\u2019re a people-manager.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding Your Identity as a Leader<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you have influence on the lives of others, you have to have direction for your own life. What are your core values? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Have you processed the triumphs and traumas in your own story? How might God use your passions, gifts, and past experiences to encourage others? What is your calling?\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I had a dollar for every time someone suggested I branch out, I\u2019d own a lake house in Winter Park.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People ask me questions all the time, like, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHave you ever thought about traveling and speaking? Or leading conferences? Or starting a mentorship program for pastors?&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The truth is, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, I don\u2019t really think about those things. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not because they\u2019re unworthy endeavors. It\u2019s because I know who I am. I am a local church pastor. This is how God\u2019s using my story to help others, and it\u2019s what I want to do. I want to build the best church in Central Florida that God and I can possibly build. And for me \u2013 if I&#8217;m able to do that \u2013 at the end of my life, that\u2019s how I&#8217;m going to define success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Heart of Leadership<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the day,<\/span><b> leadership is care. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have to care about the people you\u2019re influencing in order to build trust. The best leaders don\u2019t just inspire people, they develop and empower people. Then, when conflict arises (and it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> arise), people will fill in the gaps of missing information with charity of interpretation. They\u2019ll trust your leadership even when they don\u2019t completely understand it. This is critical. You don\u2019t have to do everything perfectly in a church, a family, or an organization. But you have to have trust.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not to say there won\u2019t be people who leave your company or reject your leadership. There will always be those people. A long time ago, when I was first going into ministry, a guy took me aside and gave me one of the best pieces of wisdom I\u2019ve ever been given. He said, \u201cWhenever people are telling you how awesome you are, it\u2019s not completely true. And whenever people are telling you how horrible you are, it\u2019s not completely true.\u201d\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the two loneliest aspects of leadership \u2013 the starstruck praise and the scathing condemnation. Both make you feel set apart from everyone else. But neither should define you.\u00a0<\/span> <b>Know who you are. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do the hard work of understanding yourself, whether that work is done privately with Jesus, with a therapist, spouse, or friend. Take time to understand how God\u2019s wired you. Take inventory of areas where you need to grow. Commit to working through your baggage, and embrace your calling. There is only one \u201cyou\u201d on the face of this planet, and God has given you influence over someone else.
