If someone asked me to describe myself, I\u2019d rattle off a list of all the roles I played\u2014wife, mom, daughter, friend, volunteer\u2014without even stopping to think about who I truly was. I believed I was only what I did or what others saw me as. But over time, God has gently and repeatedly shown me that my identity isn\u2019t about what I do\u2014<\/span><b>it\u2019s about who I belong to.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The Things That Try to Define Us<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We live in a world that constantly tries to define us\u2014telling us who we should be, what we should do, and how we should look. It can be easy to start letting these things become the lens through which we view ourselves. But here\u2019s the truth: all these things are temporary. They shift, they change, and when they do, we can feel a little lost. But here\u2019s the good news: what God says about us doesn\u2019t change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at a few things that try to define us:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Achievements:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s so tempting to base our worth on the things we accomplish. We feel that high when we hit a milestone, but then that feeling fades, and we\u2019re left chasing the next win.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>What God says:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor we are God\u2019s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Ephesians 2:10) We are loved and chosen by God\u2014not by our accomplishments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Past Mistakes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When we mess up, it\u2019s easy to feel like we\u2019ll never be \u201cgood enough\u201d again. We think our mistakes define us, but failure isn\u2019t the end of the story.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>What God says:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTherefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2 Corinthians 5:17) You are made new in Christ. Your past doesn\u2019t hold you back\u2014God\u2019s grace and forgiveness set you free. .<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other People\u2019s Opinions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> How often do we let others\u2019 opinions shape who we are? It\u2019s natural to care about what people think, but we need to remember that our identity comes from God, not from others.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <b>What God says:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou are precious and honored in my sight, and I love you.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Isaiah 43:4) You don\u2019t have to prove yourself to anyone. God\u2019s love for you is constant and unchanging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Roles and Titles:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Whether we\u2019re a parent, spouse, employee, or volunteer, it\u2019s easy to get wrapped up in our roles. But roles change, and sometimes unexpectedly. Our true identity isn\u2019t found in what we do\u2014it\u2019s found in who we are in Christ.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>What God says:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God\u2019s special possession.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1 Peter 2:9) Titles and different positions may come and go, but your identity as God\u2019s beloved is forever.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What God Says About You (And Why It Matters)<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we let things like past mistakes, achievements, or roles define us, we\u2019re building our identity on shaky ground. But God\u2019s truth is unchanging. We need to allow His voice to be the loudest in our lives\u2014not the voices of our past, our performance, or others\u2019 expectations. When <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> voices get too loud, turn back to God\u2019s Word and find the truth that speaks most to you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are deeply loved (John 3:16)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are forgiven and set free (Colossians 1:13-14)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are created for a purpose (Jeremiah 29:11)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are a child of God (John 1:12)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What other Scripture helps remind<\/b><b><i> you<\/i><\/b><b> who you are in God\u2019s eyes? (Write it down, memorize it, and let it shape your identity.)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Living in the Freedom of Who You Really Are<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your identity is rooted in Christ, the pressure is off. Jesus is enough\u2014His sacrifice, His love, and His finished work on the cross are all we need.
