CALL TO WORSHIP<\/strong>
\nChurch, today we light the fourth candle of the Advent season which is the candle of love.<\/span>
\nJohn 1:14 declares \u201cThe Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us\u201d which assures us that God has entered into human history through the incarnation of the Son. The season of Advent, a season of waiting, is designed to cultivate our awareness of God\u2019s actions\u2014past, present, and future. In Advent we heighten our anticipation for the ultimate fulfillment of all Old Testament promises, when the wolf will lie down with the lamb, death will be swallowed up, and every tear will be wiped away. In this way Advent highlights for us the larger story of God\u2019s redemptive plan. Though Christ has come, not all things have reached completion. While we remember Israel\u2019s waiting and hoping and we give thanks for Christ\u2019s birth, we also eagerly anticipate His second coming at the end of time.<\/span>
\nAs we await our coming King, we read these words together:<\/span>
\nO King of the nations, and their desire,<\/span><\/i>
\nthe cornerstone making both one:<\/span><\/i>
\nCome and save the human race,<\/span><\/i>
\nwhich you fashioned from clay.<\/span><\/i>
\nCome, Lord Jesus<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

CALL TO CONFESSION<\/strong>
\nAs we continue in our time together, we are going to pause to turn our eyes and\u00a0<\/span>hearts to Jesus by remembering his sacrifice on the cross, through the holy\u00a0<\/span>sacrament of Communion.<\/span>
\nTo prepare ourselves, we will spend a few moments in silent confession.\u00a0<\/span>We do this each week because we are all sinful people. We are sinners by\u00a0<\/span>human nature, and we are sinners by the daily choices we make.\u00a0<\/span>Because we are sinful, it is good for us to take time so we can be honest about\u00a0<\/span>our sin. Our time of confession provides this opportunity.\u00a0<\/span>Each week during Advent we have focused our confession on a specific theme.\u00a0<\/span>Today we focus on Love.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWill you hear this prayer of confession as I pray it over you?<\/span>
\nLord Christ,<\/b>
\nwe confess our willingness to be loved<\/b>
\nbut also our reluctance to love.<\/b>
\nWe confess our readiness to accept your forgiving love<\/b>
\nbut also our refusal to forgive.<\/b>
\nWe confess our eagerness to grasp your offer of redeeming love\u00a0<\/b>
\nbut also our resistance to follow you without question.<\/b>
\nIn this Advent time, forgive us our failure<\/b>
\nto respond as we should.<\/b>
\nCome to us anew, and by your grace,\u00a0<\/b>
\nassist us to receive you\u00a0with joy, as the shepherds;<\/b>
\nwith gratitude, as Simeon;<\/b>
\nwith obedience, as Mary;<\/b>
\nwith love, as you have loved us.<\/b>
\nEven so: come, Lord Jesus.\u00a0<\/b>
